The Adult Correspondence Education Program, PEAC, is an official program of the Ministry of Education implemented by the General Directorate of Non-Formal Education, it is aimed at young people and adults who for different reasons could not finish primary education. It is an accelerated education program which allows the completion, in two stages (two years), of primary school by developing skills oriented to productivity, aligned with the National Curriculum.

Nature of the Program

The Adult Correspondence Education Program, PEAC; is a program based upon a flexible organization, timetable, and schedules, it focuses on areas with high rates of school backwardness. The nature of PEAC´s Program is accelerated; the students can finish primary education in two years. It is an official program and its educational delivery is completely free.

Purpose

Provide an educational service at the Primary Education Level with an integral education linked to daily life and employment, aimed at people who for different reasons have not been able to complete their studies at the primary level.

Objectives

  • Provide an educational provision for young people and adults who, due to work reasons, family responsibilities, low economic resources, or geographical distance, have not completed their studies at the Primary Education Level.
  • Supply a learning system linked to life and employment, according to the expectations of the Guatemalan population.
  • Respond to the population´s training needs and the development of basic and specific personal, social, and work skills.

Legal basis

Created within the framework of Government Agreement No. 75-73 dated 15 November 1973, experimentally called the Ministry Education´s Adult Correspondence Education Project.

The program is organized and regulated by resolution 011-2018 issued by the General Directorate of Non-Formal Education.

Learning stages and areas

This program is organized into two stages. The first stage develops the contents corresponding to the first, second, and third grades of the Primary Education Level. At the end of the first stage, a certificate endorsed by the Ministry of Education is issued.

The second stage develops content corresponding to the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades of the Primary Education Level. At the end of this stage, the appropriate certificate of the second stage and the diploma of completion of the Primary Education Level is issued.

The Adult Correspondence Education Program, PEAC, is developed following the Base National Curriculum -CNB-, articulated for the young and adult population, which includes the following curricular areas, for each stage.

  • Communication and Language
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences and Technology
  • Social Sciences
  • Productivity and Development

The program is implemented either through the Non-Formal Education Departmental Coordination or with the support of institutions such as Municipalities, NGOs, Foundations, Associations, who upon meeting the established requirements, DIGEEX authorizes the implementation of the program to benefit, provided free of charge, to the population.

To register you must meet the following requirements

Stage I (Corresponding to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Grade of primary level)

  • 13 years of age or older
  • Present an original birth certificate, if you are a minor, or an attested photocopy of your Personal Identification Document (DPI) if you are of legal age.
  • Know how to read and write.
  • Fill out a registration form.

Stage II (Corresponding to 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade of primary level)

  • 13 years of age or older.
  • Present an original birth certificate, if you are a minor, or an attested photocopy of your Personal Identification Document (DPI) if you are of legal age.
  • Present the certificate of Stage I issued by the PEAC program or the appropriate certificate of 4th grade of the primary level.
  • Fill out a registration form.

How do I study?

If you need the support of a tutor and you have available time of at least eight hours a week, you can study through the blended model.

If you do not have an available time, but you have the discipline to program your studies, you can study through the distance mode, using learning means such as textbooks or on the virtual mode through the internet.
